Tacoma Film Fest (2010) \ Poster Design \

We are firm supporters of the open call design project. Open calls allow designers to step outside of their normal client process and work on a project using their own creative vision as the guide. While there is still a client responsible for selection of the end product, we, as designers, are allowed a wider breadth of design choices because it all comes down to the final product. So, when the Tacoma Film Fest announced that they would be accepting submissions for their 2010 event, we knew we wanted to be a part of the process.

The brief was simple—design an 11x17 poster for the event announcing the name and date of the event with enough room left over for sponsor and venue logos. As avid film fans, we knew we wanted to accomplish two things in developing this project. We wanted our DIY roots to show through, and we wanted a nice, big, hairy b–movie monster.

The solution came in the form of a hand cut and sewn scene depicting our much loved monster slowly crawling over Mount Rainier and descending onto the sleepy city of Tacoma. The handmade scene was then combined with additional digital elements and type to form our official submission. Sadly, in the end, we didn't end up winning the overall competition (we were just one of over 100 poster submissions), but we did receive positive feedback on our submission from the film fest judges and praise for our unique approach to the design problem.
